During the Brewers broadcast, play-by-play announcer Brian Anderson indicated that Burnes will still attend the All-Star Game but will not pitch. No official reasoning was provided as towards what made Burnes opt out of pitching during the Midsummer Classic.
Burnes may have decided not to pitch because he likely will start the first game back after the All-Star break. Clayton Kershaw, Tony Gonsolin and Sandy Alcantara are the favorites to start the game for the National League.
In his last performance, Burnes struck out 10 batters and became the franchise leader in 10-plus strikeout games with 19. He surpassed Yovani Gallardo for the franchise record.
For the Brewers, both Burnes and Josh Hader have opted out of participating in the All-Star Game this year. Devin Williams was added on and will be the lone Brewer representing the team.
